A message from Lisa!
Firstly, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We hope everyone had a lovely break. I’m excited to share some news with both our returning and new families – I have recently stepped into the role of Manager here at Watoto, and I’m thrilled to begin this journey with you all.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Sharon for trusting and supporting me to take on this position. Sharon has been an incredible leader and mentor over the past eight years, always guiding with kindness, wisdom, and dedication. Her commitment to creating a nurturing environment for both children and staff has left a lasting impact on Watoto, and I feel privileged to have learned so much from her. We wish Sharon a wonderful and well-deserved retirement filled with happiness and relaxation!
We also have two new staff members who have started this term, if you see them please give Aayesha and Afshan a warm Watoto welcome!
I look forward to working closely with all our families and supporting you throughout your time with us at Watoto.

Sharon Says Goodbye: Celebrating Her Retirement After 29 Years
Hello, Sharon here. In December 2025, I retired from my role as Manager at Watoto Pre-School. After 29 wonderful years at the preschool, it feels both surreal and heart-warming to begin sharing this news with you all.
I first joined the preschool as a volunteer nearly three decades ago, simply hoping to help out and be part of something meaningful. Over the years, I have had the privilege of growing alongside the children, the staff team, and the preschool itself. From volunteer, to practitioner, to manager, each stage has brought its own joys, challenges, and countless memories. It has truly been an honour to be part of so many children’s early learning journeys and to work with such dedicated colleagues and supportive families.
Although I stepped down from my day-to-day role at the end of last year, I’m very pleased to share that I won’t be going far. I will be joining the Management Committee as the Quality Improvement Lead. This new role will allow me to continue supporting the preschool I care so deeply about, while helping to ensure that the high standards we’ve built together remain at the heart of everything we do.
Thank you to every family past and present for your trust, your kindness, and the many moments that have made my time here so special. I look forward to the year ahead and to continuing to be part of the preschool community in a new way.
Love, Sharon

Introducing our new look..
As we enter 2026, Watoto Pre-School is embracing some exciting changes. While we say a heartfelt goodbye to our manager of 29 years, we also welcome a fresh update to our pre-school. Over the past few months, we’ve been working behind the scenes to continue improving Watoto Pre-School. Together with Sheaf Design Works, we have reshaped our logo into a more modern and vibrant version that reflects who we are today and the bright future ahead.

What are we focussing on this term at Watoto?
Our focus theme for the Spring term is "outside"
Children in our over 3's room will enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including nature hunts, measuring and comparing with natural objects, mud kitchen play, outdoor storytelling, and making bird feeders.
These activities will support early learning skills such as communication, creativity, physical development and understanding the natural world, all through fun, hands-on play.
Our rising 3's will explore the outdoors through water play, sensory texture trails, simple bug hunts, and creating art with natural materials.
These activities will support physical development, early communication, curiosity and confidence, while encouraging gentle exploration of the natural world.
Our over 2’s will enjoy leaf throwing and catching, rolling objects down slopes, making outdoor music, and filling and emptying with sand, mud and water.
These activities support physical development, early maths, curiosity and creativity, while encouraging active outdoor play.
Over the coming weeks, our babies will enjoy tummy time on grass, whilst our toddlers will enjoy push-along walks to encourage walking confidence. Both ages will then be able to get involved in bubble play, and exploring sensory nature baskets. These gentle outdoor experiences support physical development, sensory exploration and growing confidence outdoors, all in a calm and playful way.

Important Information, Changes and Reminders for Parents/Carer's

Ofsted Inspection Changes

Ofsted inspects preschools, and other places that look after young children.
They want to ensure that: “Watoto Pre-School is a safe, happy place where children Achieve, Belong and Thrive?”
There have been some recent changes to how Ofsted carries out these inspections. Ofsted now focus more on the following areas:
Safeguarding
This is about keeping children safe. Ofsted looks at how well we protect children from harm, how we respond to concerns, and how we make sure staff know what to do if they are worried about a child’s safety.
Inclusion
Ofsted checks that every child is welcomed and supported. This means meeting the needs of all children, including those with additional needs, disabilities, or different backgrounds, so everyone can take part and make progress.
Curriculum and Teaching
This focuses on what children learn and how we teach it. Ofsted looks at whether our activities help children develop skills, knowledge, and confidence, and whether staff teach in ways that help children understand and enjoy learning.
Achievement
This is about how well children are developing. Ofsted looks at children’s progress in areas such as communication, physical development, social skills, and early learning. They check that children are reaching their potential from their individual starting points.
Behaviour, Attitudes and Routines
Ofsted considers how well children behave, how they interact with others, and how routines help them feel safe and settled. They also look at children’s attitudes to learning—such as trying new things, concentrating and showing independence.
Children’s Welfare and Well-Being
This covers how we support children’s happiness, health and emotional development. Ofsted checks things like healthy lifestyles, building confidence, forming friendships, and helping children feel secure and cared for.
Leadership and Governance This looks at how well the setting is run. Ofsted checks that leaders make good decisions, support staff, work with families, and make sure the setting is safe, well-organised and focused on giving children the best start.
Ofsted's grading system:
Ofsted inspectors use several categories to grade our preschool, giving you a clear picture of our strengths and areas for growth. These grades are:
• Exceptional: Far better than expected, excelling in all areas.
• Strong Standard: Above expectations, with clear strengths.
• Expected Standard: Meets all reasonable expectations for children’s care and learning.
• Needs Attention: Some parts below the standard and need improvement.
• Urgent Improvement: Major improvements required to ensure children’s well-being and safety.
This approach helps you see where we shine and where we can do better, so you can make informed choices for your child. For more details, please see Lisa, our manager at Watoto.
Reminder to Parents/Carer's

Nappies
If your child wears nappies, please remember to bring spare nappies and wipes each day. If you forget to provide these, we will charge you for the use of the pre-school's nappies and wipes.
Session Times
A gentle reminder to drop of and collect your child at the correct times to help us maintain staff ratios and ensure a smooth day for everyone. If you are running late to either drop off and collect, please let the office know on 0330 016 5668.
Reporting Absence's and Holidays
If your child is unable to attend the pre-school due to illness, please let us know between 8am - 9am via email or telephone. If you are wanting to report a longer absence, we kindly ask that you provide us with a letter/email detailing the dates and reason for the absence. Whilst preschool attendance is important for funding purposes, please note that a week off during term time is not considered and unauthorised absence.
Labelling Loose Clothing
Please ensure your children's belongings, such as clothing and accessories are labelled with their full names to avoid lost items.
Weather Appropriate Clothing
During the colder months, we kindly ask that children are sent to pre-school in appropriate clothing. Depending on the weather, we still aim to take the children outside for some fresh air, we strongly advise packing a hat alongside their coats.
During warmer months, please provide your child with a sunhat and sun cream.
Important! Funded 30 Hours Childcare
To remain eligible for the 30-hour scheme, parents must reconfirm their eligibility with HMRC every 3 months or whenever prompted.
Keeping Watoto Preschool Safe
Your child’s safety is our top priority. Here’s what we do to keep our preschool secure:
-
Controlled Access: Fob-operated doors and monitored entry.
-
CCTV Coverage: Cameras throughout the building and outside.
-
Daily Safety Checks: Premises and equipment checked every day.
-
Trained Staff: All staff follow strict safeguarding policies.
How Parents Can Help
-
Close doors securely behind you.
-
Don’t let others “tailgate” in.
-
Sign in if staying beyond drop-off/pick-up.
-
Report anything unusual to staff.
-
Ensure your child stays with you until handed over.
A Message from Our Management Committee:
